Laurel Zimmer lives in the town and is blogging the story also. She links to this story (of which I'll only quote one line):

The injured civilian was identified Monday by his mother as Pete Husmann, 20, a senior UI mechanical engineering student from Coeur d'Alene. Janice Husmann said her son was shot three times as he rushed from his apartment to render aid after hearing the gunshots. He was in serious but stable condition and was scheduled to undergo another surgery Monday, she said.

Got that? He "rushed from his apartment to render aid.."

This is what Laurel had to say:

On the positive side, if you can call it that, we found out who the wounded citizen is. He is a mechanical engineering student here at UI, and when he heard gunshots he grabbed his “semi-automatic .45 pistol” and ran outside to try to help. He didn’t get a chance to return fire before he was wounded. That story alone almost brings tears to my eyes. There are many who might call him stupid, or emboldened by his firearm and a fool for putting his life in danger. I call him heroic. He had absolutely no obligation to do what he did, but as a concerned citizen he ran into danger instead of away from it.

Turns out there was no SKS. True to form, the "big media" got hold of a rumor and ran with it like it was a race to be the first to misreport it. Not that the particular type of weapon would have made any difference, but it was both an AK and an M1A.

Now imagine a stabbing murder for a moment, as a mental exercise. Imagine the media getting all wet over what type of knife was used, what sort of blade, what alloy, how long, and whether the handle was wood or plastic or bone. Where did he get the knife? Who sold it to him? What does the manufacturer of the knife think about this, etc., etc..

But we don't hear such discussions, mainly because there is no concerted effort (yet) to ban knives.
