Mike above apparently can’t read. The safety of your actions is emphasized by your low speed, the road you chose, and your conscious concern for your loved ones. There is a subset of people who delight in risk avoidance – especially in enforcing that risk avoidance upon others.

While I lived in Baltimore I saw a wreck involving the death of a child from an air bag deployment. Yes, air bags are unsafe for toddlers and infants whose necks could be snapped by the expansion of the air bag. That is what is known as a side effect. The primary efect is to keep people from injury during a wreck. It is safer to keep the kids in the back seats until they are, say, 12 or so. However, under controlled circumstances as described here, there is essentially zero risk to the child, and a significant benefit. Even it it just called “fun.”

As for me, my kids will remember DRIVING my truck on empty streets in an undeveloped suburb at age 10 (as soon as their little legs could reach the pedals).

Please don’t take this the wrong way, because I’m certain that you are careful and I am very confident that your child is totally safe in your care.

I just wanted to point out that the reason we don’t allow kids up front any more is because the air bags, if deployed, will cause severe injury to small children. Worse, air bags will typically deploy even if you just hit something at 10 mph.

This is not a remote risk – a small child, struck by an airbag, is going to get very hurt – it’s just a question of how bad. Even minor accidents can have terrible consequences if children are in the wrong place.

Cars didn’t have airbags back when we were kids, but things are different now…

It’s a good thing you’re well armed because in about 12 years or so you’re going to have to put her in lock down to keep the boys away.

I have a granddaughter about that age…and just as cute in my humble opinion.

My God, what a beautiful child!

I remember my father putting me on his lap when I was about 5 or 6 and letting me steer the car on the highway, while he pretended not to help. That was more than half a century ago and is still one of my fondest memories.

I distinctly remember, at about the tender age of 10 or so, riding in the bed of my grandfather’s pickup truck all over town.

Nowadays they’d probably call the SWAT team on me and take my kids away forever.

I *do* let the kids sit up front when we stop at my parents’ house before going the 100 feet home. Sometimes I let my 3.5 year old daughter “drive”. But not into the garage. That would be asking for trouble.

Especially if she got her l33t parking skillz from her mom…

My dad used to do the same thing, except for the 10 mph for 100 yards. It was more like 65 mph on the interstate. I don’t know that I suggest it, you’re probably much safer. However, I have to admit that those are some of my favorite memories from that age. I’m sure it will be the same for your daughter.
