Make sure you ask her about the time she did a straw purchase to get her son a high-powered sniper rifle

Sarah Brady is blogging. Be nice. You can make your smarmy, witty retort without being a jerk, you know.

Update: oh yeah, details on the straw purchase of a high-powered sniper rifle here.

Update: Numerous reports of comments going down the memory hole.

    I posted this:

I am grateful for the opportunity to address you. My law school class was interrupted by the news of the shooting of your husband and President Reagan. We all poured out of our classroom and glued ourselves in front of the school’s sole TV. The outrage and sadness by everyone was immeasurable.

But there were no John Hinckleys there. There was one person that I know of who fought off a mugger on the subway with his bare hands going home from an evening class. Me. There was one fellow student who was raped and her face slashed in broad daylight off the shoulder of an interstate highway without anyone even noticing.

Americans are a good, law-abiding and decent people. We can be trusted with guns for our defense and the defense of our loved ones. And for sport. And for hunting. And just because we like them. That criminals abuse them is a cause for criminal control – not “gun control”.

I’ve posted several quetions. Interestingly enough, the previous blog has had over half-a dozen posts ‘disappear’. It’s getting beyong a software glitch.

Read all the posts to Sarah. All civil and to the point. Hope it continues that way. Good job, guys and gals. Jack.

Re: Sahra’s rifle purchase. Form 4473 11a: Are you the actual buyer of the firearm (s) ? If the answer was “Yes”, Then it was a straw purchase. Jack.

  7. Josh Says:

I’m in at #36. I’d love to see an answer to my question, but she hasn’t posted in over an hour.

  8. Les Jones Says:

Question: can you not buy a gun for someone as a gift? Meaning, with no financial or other renumeration.

  9. SayUncle Says:

you can. but if the bradies had their way, you could not.

  10. straightarrow Says:

No Jack, it wasn’t a straw purchase unless she was reimbursed. Otherwise, she was the actual buyer of a gift. Perfectly legal. Also, given her stance on what we should be allowed to do, perfectly hypocritical.

  11. Sebastian Says:

It’s hard for me to understand why the Brady’s are doing this. What do they have to gain by showing that no one except pro-gun folks reads their blog? Also, Sarah’s comments look rather scripted to me, and none of the issues are really addressed. I wonder if they had her responses pre cooked up, knowing what the result was going to be like.

Either way, what they hope to gain from this is baffling to me.

Oh, and BTW, Unc is right. What Sarah Brady did wasn’t a straw purchase. A straw purchase only happens when you know the person you’re buying for is a prohibited person. If you give your wife a gift, or a friend a gift, that’s not a straw purchase, and you answer “Yes” on 4473. Also, Sarah Brady lives in Delaware, rather than Maryland. Delware’s gun laws are roughly the same as Iowa’s. May (but probably will) issue, and no odd restrictions except on NFA stuff.

  12. The Comedian Says:

I stand by the quick analysis I did of this back around the time the purchase became public information. Sarah Brady did not break any laws when purchasing a rifle to give as a gift to her son.

It was not a straw purchase.

She is a hypocrite for sure, but pushing the idea that she is a criminal, or that what she did should be criminalized, does not serve any pro-2nd amendment goal.

FWIW – IAAL, but I am not your (nor her) lawyer.

  13. Standard Mischief Says:

after 118 comments, mostly of the pro-freedom type, there’s the following message:

“Sorry, comment limit exceeded for this entry.”

I don’t have any evidence that some comments were removed, but I got into the game late. first snapshot was around 1530 eastern time on the 30th.

Brady’s opinions and beliefs are not going to be swayed by anything anyone presents to her. She is stedfast and resolved in her war against firearm ownership. Caution would be prudent in posting arguments to her blog as they will probably only add to her resolve.

  15. Jack Says:

The 4473 says: ” You are not the actual buyer if you are acquiring the firearm (s) on behalf of another person”. Jack.

More than steadfastness and resolve she likes a seat at the table. She is a very unbright woman. The very best thing that ever happened for her ego was when her husband got shot. She is committed only to remaining viable in the political milieu and keeping her seat at the table with its recompense. This is not about principle for her. It was, early on when in the throes of sorrow and pain after James’s wounding, but no more and not for a long time.

  18. GunGeek Says:

Okay, Form 4473 does say ”You are not the actual buyer if you are acquiring the firearm (s) on behalf of another person”, BUT right after that it also says “(See Important Notice 1 for actual buyer definition and examples)”.

So, if you go to page 3 of the form, and read Important Notice 1, it says “You are also the actual buyer if you are acquiring the firearm as a legitimate gift.”

    See Form 4473

As much as I don’t like saying it, if she was telling the truth, it was legal according to the federal laws.

  19. Jack Says:

GunGeek – I stand corrected. Thanks. As a dealer/mfr, I’ve never done a transfer if there was any boubt at all. Also, here in Mass, it gets more complicated in that the state form has to be done also. Jack.

Remember, I do this to entertain me, not you.
