Lets start with media translations: phrase -> what it really means

clip -> magazine
high capacity -> normal capacity
automatic -> semi-automatic
sniper rifle -> any rifle with a scope, any hunting rifle or any rifle where shooting was from more than 50 yards
assault rifle -> rifle of any sort except an assault rifle, usually something that takes pistol ammo like the Beretta Storm or something with no detachable magazine like the SKS.
sawed-off shotgun -> any shotgun with a pistol grip and no buttstock
AK-47 -> SKS
SKS -> Saiga 7.62×39

I interpret “sniper rifle” to mean any long gun with any kind of targetting optics mounted.

For example, a Daisy BB gun with a 2x scope is a “sniper rifle”.

Also, an “assault” rifle, or any other “assault” weapon, is one that, in principle, could result in the death of a person, or looks similar to something that could, inthe eyes of a neophyte observer.

For example, an all- black Daisy BB gun looks similar to an M-16 to the untrained eye, therefore it is an assault rifle. The black and wook style Daisy looks similar to an AK-47 to the untrained eye, so it is also an assault rifle.

I always figured “high-powered” meant “as opposed to throwing a rock.”

’cause then all rifles are high-powered, which does seem to be the way the media portrays it.
