The Subrau Outback is clasified as a SUV for CAFE standards or somesuch. It's because they can't make those huge fullside cars anymore without selling a million Ford Festias to make up for it. So the manufactures keep trying to make cars that people will like, so they game the system.

Enviromental wackos get all ticked off over the *cough* loopholes *cough*, but the manufactures are stringently trying to comply with the law.

Kinda reminds me of evil black rifles and the cosmetic laws that were passed against them.

Anyway, I'm sure all those huge station wagons are really tallied as SUVs.

They call it an SUV (and jump through whatever beaurocratic hoops to define it as a truck instead of a car) so that the CAFE standards that apply are those of trucks, not cars. Basically, it's why the station wagon died off in the first place. And why, instead of big honkin' cars that got 18-20mpg you had big honkin' trucks that got 10-15mpg. Yay for unintended consequences!

Yesterday there was a Volvo and a Ford Explorer parked outside my office window. The Volvo was bigger than the Exporer. Blew me away.
