I have an L1A1 that was politically corrected and sports the plastic thumbhole stock. I thought I would hate it, I don't. I love the damn stock, although my favorite guns are some very old Russians (because of their history), the L1A1 is by far the easiest to shoot and makes me shoot much better than I do with any other rifle. It is in 7.62 NATO.

AK47.net tells me MAK stands for "Modified AK", which makes a lot more sense than "Makarov", who had nothing to do with Chinese AKs.

I had one, in .223, the ugly thumbhole stock (it was actually pretty good and VERY reliable, though I got rid of it when I finally got an AR; AR magazines are much cheaper and easier to find than .223 AK mags for the MAK, plus the AR doesn't dent the brass to hell and back then fired).

Hey, I'm just glad they didn't call it an AK-47 automatic assault rifle like they usually do—gotta give 'em credit for being not quite as wrong as usual.

This story has its facts wrong. Firstly, the MAK stands for Makarov, and Mac stands for Military Armament Corporation. There is no such thing as a Mac 90.

Also inaccurate is the sentance "Manufacturers got around the ban by making the weapons under new names, without the prohibited features." , which is inflammatory and misleading.

A truer statement woyld be "Manufacturers COMPLIED WITH the ban by making NEW weapons without the prohibited features." , which is, in fact, what they did.

Apparently, there are some folks who would be more comfortable with a kid bringing a 30-30 lever gun or a pump-action shotgun to school. 'Cause you'd be so much less dead taking a 12 ga. slug to the midsection.

We should be thankful that he brought such an unreliable gun that jammed up on him, instead.
