OK, I grant that Mr. Allison is in a difficult position here; He is attempting to build a broad coalition on a politically charged subject. In a sense, he needs all the allies he can get.

And I give him full marks for discussing, debating, and defending his position with such firmness without ad hominem attacks.

Given all that, and given that I support his goal, I will offer him some suggestions, which I hope he finds useful;

<blockquote>
- Add a disclaimer stating specifically that you are focused only on Drug Prohibition and clarifying that your supporters may disagree on other topics. In fact, you could promote this as a strength of your organization. Something like this; "Even though many of our member disagree on topics like religion, abortion, even gun control - we all agree that Drug Prohibition is wrong and needs to be ended."

- Ask your members to clarify this distinction of differences within the statements. I recommend a phrase like; "This is not the official position of LEAP, but my opinion on the subject of X is Y."

- Where possible, choose to avoid associating yourself and the LEAP organization with persons whose opinions and presentations are contrary to the focus of your goal. I realize that you are in need of members, supporters, and speakers. But even then, you should be choosy. And I'm not saying that a person who supports gun control shouldn't be a member of your group. But I am saying that if you have a candidate for a high-profile position in your organization, they need to be willing and able to clearly enunciate the difference between their personal opinions and LEAP's.

- If necessary, make changes. Everything and everybody needs to make adjustments to their environments. Successful organizations change and adapt.

I wish you continued success and I hope to continue supporting your cause in the future.
Most importantly, I hope to have the option of enjoying my life as I choose - through the hard-earned win of your organization. Thanks for your efforts and sacrifices.

I can understand the necessity of setting up a broad tent and all that, but when a member of an organization dedicated to reforming or eliminating one type of prohibition turns around and advocates and creating an even bigger one, you've got to wonder if he really understands the concept.
