I wholeheartedly agree. Although breeds may have tendencies toward agression, it is the owner that fosters or inhibits the aggressive personality, and it is the owner who needs to be held accountable.

A sad side effect of this current fear-of-"pitbull" trend -- too many of these dogs are being put down. A friend of mine worked at an animal shelter that was (and still is) run by one of the "dumb people" you're talking about, this moron actually said that they weren't putting down enough dogs. Some counties euthanize these breeds as soon as they come into the shelter, and won't consider adpting any of them out.

I recently adopted a very sweet, very affectionate dog that likes everyone she meets, including dogs and people. She was a stray, so I'll never know for sure, but she looks to be part or all Stafordshire Bull Terrier. I have been really pleased with the majority of interactions we've had when in public. Most people seem to see a sweet dog first, then realize she's a pit-type-breed, and then comment on how they have a bad rap. My hope is that owners in similar situations will make an effort to keep all the kind and wonderful pits out in the public eye.

Good post. I used to think the same thing about pit bulls - if they hurt, they should be taken away (much like the guns argument, isn't it?) - but that's the easy and ridiculous way out.

Incidentally, I have a good friend who has a pit bull. It's one of the nicest and sweetest dogs I've ever met.
