Sounds like the harbor seal in AK that was loving nursed back to health after being rescued from the Valdez oil spill; months of touch-and-go rehabilitation until finally, one day, the seal was strong enough to be sent back into the wild.

It was loaded onto a boat and brought to the mouth of the harbor. They triumphantly released this poor seal back into the ocean, free once again.

With cameras still rolling, the seal swam approximately 300 feet out from the boat, and was promptly eaten by a killer whale.
