The author said in the foreword to the version I read that if he'd written it today ('today' being many years ago but post-Thatcher), it would have been about an evil oppressive Left-Wing government, and made an emphatic point about how either kind of totalitarianism was equally bad. I felt that sentiment came through in the novel. I fear that this will be cut out of the movie version. I'm planning to wait to see it until I hear from others.
