I’d say its comparable to the antigunners hold on the Dems. Not enough to be a majority of the Party faithful, but too small to ignore. A significant and vocal minority that the powers that be choose not to ignore for fear of pissing off a substantial flanking contingent. We’ve all got our loonies in the closet…some people (like me) acknowledge their existence and start websites trying to get rid of them =)

I think you may place too much on the religious right’s hold. Regardless, comparing Republicans to Bin Laden is pretty much a Godwin violation.

I don’t have a big problem with that sort of comment. Denying that the religious right has the GOP in its thrall is akin to…well…denying that Intelligent Design isn’t the theocratists Creationist agenda run amok. Funny how a lot of people hold both of those positions =).
