Maybe they don't have planes with both the range and the performance needed to get through Irani air defenses. Even if they do, they'll have to cross over other nations to reach Iran. I think the shortest path is through Iraq, but they won't do that now without assurances that <i>our</i> planes will look the other way. Otherwise, I think they'd have to go through Syria (no big problem, but dogfights there would use fuel and ammo they'll need later on) and Turkey (possibly a big problem). They won't confirm or deny that they have nukes on them. But the analyst I read the info from indicated that the subs are intended to be a MAD deployment.
