I think this is a valid point, but Serenity is an anomoly. The power of bloggers is that we tend to be Influentials, which means that norms value our opinions. The problem with Serenity/Firefly is that you can't describe the goddamned thing in less than an hour. It's a western with spaceships? Oh. But its really about a bunch of freedom fighters? But its really just a movie about a TV show? But I don't need to have seen the TV show?

I've tried to tell people about the movie. They just didn't get it. I don't normally see that.

I can't recall the last time I actually walked into a theater to watch a movie. It is expensive, time consuming, and not conducive to actually enjoying the movie. It seems that there are no standards of behavior among the audience and I don't like rubbing shoulders in a darkened room with people I wouldn't be seen on a downtown street with.

I await the CD on movies, nowadays.

I saw Serenity, and before that, was the Star Wars flick, and before that, the earlier Star Wars flick. All three times, I forgot my cellphone and my laser pointer.

Has the possibility occurred to anyone that the movie is losing money because it sucks? You can only polish a turd so much.

Now I have no direct knowledge of whether or not this movie is any good, and it scores a solid 81 on the Tomatometer, but then the critics likes Revenge of the Sith and Terms of Endearment, too...

Serenity isn't a huge money loser, it just won't turn a profit until the DVD and overseas theater receipts come in. Total projected revenues = 83 million, projected costs = 64 million, plus, unless every network is run by idiots, some network will pick up the series again. However, I think that the days when Hollywood could make a profit on American theater receipts alone and everything else was gravy are over, except possibly for movies that every teen has to watch - without parents around...

Theater prices are ridiculous and conditions are deplorable. I can easily wait six months for the comfort of watching it from my own couch. I also give up the big screen - but don't have to watch it from an odd angle. And I can pause the disk to go pee or make popcorn.

Countertop pretty much nails it. My last movie at a theater was the second Indiana Jones, in 1989 I believe.

Whoa...

What about the new downtown Knoxville theater that will save downtown? Are you saying that movie theaters are obsolete? The humanity...

Guess what, they may be. Box office receipts are down for 19 months. The reasons, high ticket prices, high food and beverage prices, and most importantly crappy movies geared to the 13 to 24 year old market. People want to use their new wide screen home theater setups.

It is like UPN took over Hollywood. I saw Serenity and it was okay. I had not been to see a movie in six months before that.

With DVD and the HBO TiVO alternative movie theaters are in trouble. You can see the desperation as every TV show from the last thirty years has been made into a movie. Apparently Hollywood is out of ideas.

So, will Knoxville have a downtown movie theater or will Regal chicken out at the last minute?

I only go to the cinema if I want my evening ruined by a bunch of teenage louts throwing popcorn around and talking the whole way through. Or if I want to listen to people coughing the whole damned film.

Cause people don't go to movies anymore - they are overpriced, inconvienient dinosaurs. TO get me to head out, it takes something huge - perhaps Serenity is it - but I just didn't have the time.

In the last 3-4 years I've actually gone to the theater to see just a couple of movies -

the 3 Harry Potter movies, the 3 new Star Wars flicks (Sith twice), the Lord of the Rings movies, and I went to the premier of a real dumb movie around the block from my office at the Motion Picture Association of America.

Everything else I've waited for the DVD release. It'll be interesting to see how it does on DVD.

Oh yeah, and while blogs may be the new media lots of bloggers seem to be star trek groupie sci fi geeks which doesn't really translate into the general public well.
