Memphis: Funky or Fonky?

I like Memphis, warts and all, but I know that our perception in the rest of the state and the South is pretty unfavorable. We’re perceived as a crime capital, a dirty city and a bunch of whiners and complainers with an inferiority complex.

So I’d like to open a forum to hear what folks really think about my City of Good Abode. Whether you’ve been here or not, passed through or spent a while, what is the view of Memphis from the great Eastern Division? Since I’m asking, feel free to say what you really think.

What do you think about Memphis?

I live and work here. I born here. So I am understandably biased, but, We Memphians have lots to like here in the river city. We have some of the finest restaraunts in the area. You can go out any night of the week and have your choice of five star places to eat. Memphis also has a rich musucal history.
All that being said, on the bad side we have rampant taxation with no regard for actual doing good with money. We have more than our fair share of certain crimes. Our traffic is beyond pale and the drivers themselves are…less than adequate in my book.
Overall, I think Memphis is just like every other mid major city in terms of good and bad. We seem to have a fairly low cost of living and overall good people in and around the city.

I lived there for 3 years, and it gave me a nerve disease.

Besides that, it was great, especially getting lost and accidently driving through Orange Mound after dark.

As a white person in Orange Mound, that is.

I was surprised when the cops pulled me over and told me to get out before I got shot.

Thier are much better places to live. I live just out side of memphis city limits below german town. I got a job in collivervile out of college and picked an apartment that was a little further away and cheaper. So i do not have much expericne with the “real” memphis per say, but their seems to be much better places to live than in memphis.

I like life quite and peacful.

I lived in Cordova. I moved in just in time to hear about the first drug murder ev4r at Wolfchase Mall (the “white” mall), and the home invasion in G’Town that resulted in the entire family being raped and murdered and the house set on fire, the only survivor being the 14 year old daughter who flung her bound self out of an upstairs window.

    Memphis is heaven.

Remember, I do this to entertain me, not you.
