    Subject: Assault Rifles and Criminals

Dear Editor: This Saturday I am going to Camp Perry, Ohio to compete in the 101st year of the Civilian Marksmanship Program National Rifle Matches.

I will be shooting an assault rifle, along with 5000 other competitors.

These competitors will come from every state in the Union, including a teamand many individuals from Florida. They will be staying for ten days in and around Camp Perry. Some will stay in unairconditioned housing built on base for German prisoners of war in WWII. Some will stay in motels. Some will rent cabins and fishing camps.

They will be NRA members of every race, sex, and creed. These are the dreaded NRA hardcore, the assault rifle competitors themselves, slandered as ignorant, rascist, and violent in most of contemporary media. Some of them will be juniors, of an age too young to possess an assault rifle in the State of Florida.

All shooters will be competing for coveted medals, awards, and trophys. Some of the awards date to the beginnings of the National Matches.

My question to you is this: Given your stance that “assault rifles” are too dangerous for law abiding citizens, (not to mention children) to possess and operate, and given the crowded conditions and limited supervision present for the last hundred years at the National Matches, how many people will I witness dead or injured in “assault rifle” crimes or accidents during my stay at the National Matches?

Further, would you predict the number of confrontations with civil authority, injuries, and arrests that will be made in the two weeks of the “assault rifle” phase of the Nationals? (shotgun, pistol, smallbore and black powder are already over, so we’ll bypass that guess.)

If you guess ZERO, then your guess will be in line with the previous 101 years of the National Matches at Camp Perry.

At the Nationals there are PLENTY of “assault rifles” and plenty of citizens. What we will lack are CRIMINALS. For some reason, criminals do not care to join and shoot service rifle matches with the NRA.

Assault rifles may be safely handled by any person, even children. The stats from the NRA members at the National Matches proves this.

I think your approach to criminality needs re-examination. Criminality seems to have little linkage to possession of an “assault rifle.”

I hope you will join me in wishing the Florida team safe travel to the matches. I know they will be safe after they arrive.
