Cold Calling

You gotta be careful when you cold-call people asking them for money. I just got off the phone with someone raising money for the 21st Century Democrats, an organization that supports “progressive” Democrats. I asked him what positions their candidates would take. He said they wanted to reduce the deficit.

I asked if they were going to cut spending. He said yes. I asked if they were going to cut spending on welfare. He said yes. I asked if they were going to cut spending on the arts. He said yes.

The world’s turned upside down!

He wouldn’t tell me what their position on gun rights was.

As you are willing to believe what a Democrat told you on the phone while raising money;perhaps I could interest you and this large Bridge I own in New York City.

Let’s see…Clinton reduced the deficit, cut non-defense discretionary spending and reformed welfare. Not sure about the arts thing though.

Republicans on the other hand have been known to raise the deficit and increase spending, inspite of their rhetoric about small government. (Politicians saying one thing and then doing another..who’da thunk it?)

So, operating on the principle that all politicians lie, I should vote for the candidate with whom I agree the least.

I think that there is a realpolitik working here. Only Nixon could go to China, only Clinton could reform Welfare and only Bush could make an entitlement program bigger.

Both candidates make promises to spend up the wazoo, but the reality is that they don’t keep all their promises, some out of being unable to pass them in Congress and others due to having no intention to do so. Having said that, inspite of the hype, Republicans don’t believe in small government..they just believe in different government spending priorities and history has shown that spending goes up the most under Republicans.

I am a fiscal conservative and have supported the Republicans in the past (particularly when they were behind the BBA), but I’ve seen the reality that its Democrats in office that cause the lowest increases in overall spending and debt reduction.

In short, don’t believe the hype!
