The Big Brother thing is simply a convenient boogeyman to trot out whenever someone thinks the government is looking in your direction too closely.

It means nothing...

South Carolina installed them on a number of highways and they have proved to be beneficial in assisting emergency personnel and in helping move traffic around accidents.

I don't get this big brother worry. In exactly what way does this invade our privacy?

The big brother possibility is a little disconcerting. But if you're headed out in the afternoon, it will be nice to peak at the highway to see if you should go a different route.

We have traffic cameras here, but I'm not sure if they belong to the state or to the TV News people.

WASDOT (state of Washington) has had a similar system in the Seattle area for years.
Camera feeds can be accessed on the web, and the local morning shows use them during their traffic reports.
Not sure if the WASDOT cams have tape running or not.

Do the cameras really "work"? If an ax occurs don't a dozen or so ppl call via cell phone to report it? And exactly what the hell are they gonna do if traffic gets backed up?...have a message board telling everyone already stuck in traffic that traffic isnt moving? Sounds like a waste of money.
