That whacky NRA is ruining it again

I posted about the NRA blacklist website below. A lot of people have opined on it, including Jeff. I will say one thing, if this whole blacklist thing makes gun control popular again (which it has to a small extent, illustrated by the site mentioned below), it will clearly be the fault of the NRA.

You know, there has to be an organization out there that supports and advocates responsible gun ownership, without devolving into militia-wacko-land. Hasn’t there? Bueller?

I acknowledge that individual gun ownership is a constitutionally protected right. I acknowledge that the intent of that right is to allow the citizenry to help defend the US if we’re ever attacked on our own soil, and to allow us to engage in armed rebellion if the government ever becomes oppressive. I acknowledge that because of those intentions, limiting us to hunting rifles is Not A Good Idea.

That said, I do not acknowledge that any law with the word “gun” anywhere in it is automatically bad. I really believe that there are common sense regulations that make sense — like, for example, requiring a gun owner to actually know how to use the blasted thing.

Surely I can’t be alone in this, can I? Bueller? Bueller?

You’re not alone. I agree to an extent to some gun laws (for example, the right to keep and bear arms doesn’t mean you may carry any time you want). I’ve said before how i think we should fix gun control in this country:

What is whacko about the militia? Other than the types of people who tend to start their own being nuts (skinheads, racists, and radicals) they are constitutionally protected.

Well, I understand that militias are constitutionally protected, but it’s the nutbags you’re talking about that are the problem for me. Hence the wacko-land. A non-separatist milita doesn’t really bother me (it would help o be able to have the citizenry defend themselves if any traditional force ever attacked us on home soil). I even acknowledge the people’s right to form a separitist militia, but frankly, those folks are a little out there.

The idea behind the armed rebellion thing is to give recourse if the government ever stops adhering to the Constitution. But as often as not, they want to separate because the gub’mint is enforcing the Constitution. (i.e., “won’t let us make the kids pray in school,” “makes us treat the coloreds as equals,” etc.)

Remember, I do this to entertain me, not you.
